Fall Decor Inspiration

While the Florida heat continues to blaze into the middle of October with no relief in sight, I decided to hunt down some fall decor images to inspire me to start decorating. With all this sticky humid weather, I started to think about how pumpkins might rot on my porch. So, I'm holding off on any type of outdoor display for another week or so.

In the meantime, I'm going to pull the gorgeous fall wreath (that I purchased at Costco 2 years ago) down from my attic and today's classy ideas will specifically focus on the indoors and are more elegant than themed.

WALL ART

Image from Verosimile.com

What a great way to incorporate some of the outdoors inside your home this fall. Whether it be a bedroom, living room or hallway this soft artwork could blend into many decor schemes. You can switch it out come springtime for something different.

CENTERPIECES

This would make for such an elegant centerpiece for Thanksgiving Day, particularly if you're hosting the dinner. I loved this image because it incorporates beautiful, colorful flowers, candles and bright pumpkins.  The trick here is to cut the top of the pumpkin large enough to fit a small glass vase inside for the stems to sit in.

These little cornhusk votives are a great way to inexpensively add a little fall flair to your table. Simply wrap the dry cornhusks around the votive (you can use some doublesided tape) and then wrap either some ribbon or some raffia around the bottom or middle of the votive. Just pop in some tealights or votives candles and you're ready to go! I aslo love the gorgeous purple roses placed in the center of the table. This would be a great casual tablescape to add for guests dining with you or simply to add some spice to your dining table for everyday use.

This looked super easy and quick to put together. Simply gather a few smaller platters or one long platter as shown above to create an elegant look with some pumpkins, or acorns and candles, add whatever you like. to add a touch of elegance, add some real flower clippings before guests arrive or use artificial ones so you're centerpiece will last longer.

This is a perfect example of how you can keep your decor very neutal, using mainly earthtones and browns without feeling the need to add a lot of orange if you don't want to. Add some little pumpkins with name tags as place cards and an ultra-simple centerpiece of pillar candles in tall or hurricane vases with some acorns beneath.

SIDEBOARD & CONSOLE TABLE DISPLAYS

I found this image last fall and have been wanting to create these glittery, glamorous little pumpkins. You  can use either real or artificial pumpkins and then add very fine glitter in multiple fall colors to each pumpkin or you can mix some of the colors together. You can either prop them up on large candlestick holders as shown or place them atop cake plates, and even add the domed lid too for a fun kitchen countertop display.

Image from wwwPotterybarn.com

Potterybarn has a lot of great vase fillers and I particularly like their faux acorns. Of course you can use the real deal too, if you have an oak tree on your property. Add some real or faux leaves and a pillar candle and you have a great piece that can be used on a kitchen table, on a coffee table or a sideboard or console. The best part is many have a large glass vase and neutral candles already so there is little to invest.

This is one of the most simple things you can do to add some color in your home. Use candles that you have already or pick some up at the dollar store that you don't mine altering and glue some lentils and beans to th side of some pillar candles or even orange and white pumpkins. The process of gluing might take some time but it is a fun project and if you decide it's not for you, you can peel off the beans and glue for it's natural state once again.

I love glass cloches, cake stands and apothecary jars, so this particular idea is one of my favorites and one that I'll likely be adding into our decor soon. By adding a few gourds, you can really add some great color for a wonderful display. You can keep the glass cloches and reuse them for christmas too by simply switching out the contents.

This super easy dried corn vase filler is such a fun idea. You simply pop a candle in and it's done. To update for Christmas, you could replace the corn with dried cranberries.

If you love monograms like I do, you can add the names of everyone in your family or use the pumpkins to spell something specific like harvest or fall. For more information on how to create these visit the martha stewart website.

What are your favorite fall decorating ideas? What have you done so far to add the feeling of autumn in your home? Do you have a favorite display or centerpiece you use or create every year? We'd love to hear all about it, feel free to link us to some images too!

Cupcake Cuteness: Baking Ideas & Fun Finds

Do you love cupcakes? I don't know what it is about those adorable little treats that puts a smile on my face everytime. Whether homemade or boutique bought, I love a delicious cupcake topped with smooth and creamy icing-and the more creative of a design, the better. This post is for you ladies out there that love cupcakes (and anything cupcake related) as much as I do!

CUPCAKE POPS

How adorable are these? Wouldn't these be great for a little girl's birthday party? My friend Lily first introduced me to cake balls which were essentially cake with a hard chocolate coating, I tried red velevet which were delish! If you want to try these cupcake pops or smaybe ome cake balls/pops or just some spooky hallowe'en cupcakes, visit Bakerella for more info.

GIANT CUPCAKE PAN

This  year I wanted to do something a little different for my birthday cake. Since I wasn't celebrating a big year and I wasn't planning a party or having a gathering, I decided to pick up the Wilton Giant Cupcake Pan to bake my birthday cake. When I saw it at Michael's, I just knew I had to have it! I got to use a 40% off coupon which made it that much sweeter. Think about it- you could make so many fun and different birthday cakes for adults and kids alike from this one pan! Wouldn't this be a wonderful idea as a baby's 1st Birthday cake. No need to spend a lot of money on an individual cake. Let them tear that one to pieces and shove their little fingers in it and save the larger cake exclusively for the birthday guests.

CUPCAKE PIN CUSHION

Calling also sewers! This pin cushion is super cute and available on Etsy. This would be such a cute gift for a friend or yourself! I love that they are made from recycled and re-purposed vintage chenille bedspreads from the 1940's and 1950's-how cool!

CUPCAKE BOX BABY ONSIES

These would make such and adorable and original gift. A package of six onesies inside a cupcake box that are in the shape of actual cupcakes! Another wonderful and unique find on Etsy from Claudia's Boutique.

CUPCAKE APRON (MOMMY& ME SET)

For all you ladies who know someone that loves to bake with their daughter, how cute would these matching aprons be as a giftAnother creative and handmade find from Etsy.

CUPCAKE SOAPS

This summer while I was visiting Toronto to see my family and friends I had a little birthday party. One of my girlfriends got me something thoughtful-cupcake soaps! They are just too pretty to lather up with, but I've put them to good use on display! I found a pair of glass cake stands with lids at Ross for just $14.99. I used to use them for displaying treats but now I have a treat that won't expire. They are on display on my kitchen counter. they were a gift purchased in a Toronto boutique so I don't have the store name, however you can find these all over the web including etsy like the strawberry one above.

PASSPORT COVER

This is an adorable gift for a little girl who is traveling for the first time or a teen who just wants to make her passport look fabulous! You can find it here.

CUPCAKE BOOKS

If you love to bake but feel like you've run out of ideas, why not pick up a cupcake book with hundreds of cupcake recipes. Sure, you can search online, but there's something about a compilation of glossy pages and mouth watering treats that is hard to resist! These books also make great gifts for all the cupcake-lovers you know. You can find these and many more at the Cake Journal Book Shop.

CUPCAKE TEES

Do you want something wearable to express your love for this famous treat? Why not grab a cupcake tshirt. You can find this one here.

CUPCAKE COSTUMES

If you were thinking of a fun costume for yourself or your daughter for a costume party, a cupcake costume could be adorable! I have never personally seen a cupcake costume ever. You can do a search and get a lot of fun ideas to make your own or look up patterns online.

I  SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST!

There is actually a website called All Things Cupcake! If you want to find more great ideas, recipes, fun ideas, order cupcakes, find costumes, birthday ideas, they've got it!

I would love to get my hands on some winning Christmas-themed cupcakes that I can bake this year. Here are two dozen that I baked for a ladies holiday gathering. It was a lot of fun-we had great conversation, yummy snacks and also did a white elephant gift exchange!

Vanilla Cupcakes and icing with Mint Spear candies and cinnamon fireballs.

My personal favorite cupcake flavors are banana, lemon, carrot cake and key lime pie. I guess you could say I like the fruity flavors that don't give me too much chocolate overload. What are yours? Do you have an amazing cupcake recipe you'd love to share? E-mail me or leave a comment and I'll post it in an upcoming blog post.

Have a SWEET day!

Manners Monday: Cruise Ship Etiquette

If you haven't had the chance to vacation aboard a cruise ship, I highly recommend trying it. As many people are looking at how they can use up the remaining days of their vacation, all-inclusive vacations and cruises are generally popular options. I have been looking at some cruise options for an upcoming Milestone birthday that my husband will be celebrating in the coming months. While I was in cruise planning mode, I thought now was an appropriate time to share some cruise ship etiquette!

Cruises are a wonderful place to relax and unwind. There is nowhere to drive to once aboard the ship and all of your meals, onboard activities and entertainment are included (besides drinking and gambling of course). There are beautiful spas to be enjoyed, pools to lounge beside and wonderful cuisine to be devoured! You can even take some exciting day trip excursions to see all of the sights, to many it is the perfect vacation. It also happens to be one of the least expensive options as it includes many things that you would be paying for separately during other trips, including the ever-popular all-inclusive vacation. With that said, like all areas of life, there is some etiquette that needs to be adhered to so everyone can enjoy a happy vacation.

After experiencing several different cruise destinations with various cruiselines, I felt these tips were the most important and beneficial to new and regular cruisers alike.

1.  Once aboard, while walking the halls of the ship during the day or evening, dress appropriately. Underwear or nightwear are not acceptible. It's best to wear a cover up over swimwear also.

2.  If you are traveling with young children, be sure to watch over them and ensure that they aren't running through the halls or splashing other patrons in the pools. Anything that would be considered inconsiderate on land is equally as impolite on the ship.

I recall two couples (they were sisters) that sat at the table behind us on our last cruise. They brought their 2 and 3 year old girls to the table each night of our fine dining restaurant who were loud, disruptive and a complete nuisance. It was very distracting and I have no idea how they felt relaxed with toddlers past their bedtime. Their female server tried each night to take the girls for a little walk or calm them down to allow the other dining patrons to enjoy their meal. Luckily, there are babysitting services on board for these vary instances.

3.  There are designated smoking areas on ships, make sure you smoke within them. Smoking on balconies is generally not permitted although it happens all the time. My husband and I have been the victim of secondhand smoke in the past while enjoying a good book out on our balcony. As non-smokers, we found it to be overwhelming so we wound up spending our quiet time in the spa area or by the pool instead.

4.  Adhere to the ship's dress code. Most evenings will call for smart casual wear with one or more evenings dedicated to formal attire. The cruise ship's website will also provide this information so you'll know exactly what to pack before heading to your destination.

5.   Keep the noise to a minimum! The walls can be thin on the ship, so it's best to err on the side of quiet in cabins or other quiet areas like the library. Cabin door slamming is a common complaint of many as they can be heavy and therefore loud if not held and shut properly. It's best to push it closed gently and not let it slam shut, especially in the later hours when many are asleep. Talking at a normal volume is generally never a problem, but yelling after kids or to another family member down a hallway will be heard by many.

6.  When embarking, re-boarding after a day of excursions or waiting in line at a buffet it's never okay to jump the queque. Simply wait your turn as you would in any other line. Encourage your children to do the same, no matter how hungry they are feeling or how much they want to get back on the ship. Be prepared by having your cruise ID card ready to be scanned as to not slow down the line.

7.  Tip as you normally would in any other circumstance. Many times the employee's main incomes come from tips and they work hard 7 days per week (yes, you read that correctly they do not get a day off for months on end) so show them a little love for their hard work and provide a gratuity at the end of your vacation.

My best recommendation if you are looking for the creme de la creme, is to go with Celebrity cruise lines-especially their newer or newly refurbished ships. The only problem is you may be ruined for any future cruises. I last boarded the Solstice for a wonderful European cruise but they also tour through the Caribbean in the summer months if that's your thing. As the name suggests, I guarantee you will get the royal treatment and feel just like a Celebrity! This is now my favorite cruise line.

Fabulous Decor Finds for Under Five Dollars!

A few days ago I started a fun little experiment on myself, with my fun money that I typically use for decor purchases, I've started limiting myself to just $5 or less. Most of the stores I'm frequenting are ones like TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Home Goods, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Target and of course yard sales!

The great thing that I've discovered with the discount retailers like Marshall's is that they typically place a Clearance section in the HOME section of their store towards the back (after you've looked at everything else). This has now been the place I start first when perusing the goods. They have everything from contemporary frames for $2 to elegant notepaper sets for around $3 and often have artwork for a steal too!

Now, these are specific to each store and state so it would be unfair to post my finds because not all stores will have what I've discovered. You all know how much I love to save money on great decor. If you missed the amazing Walmart finds, take a look at my  last decor post for some of their amazing accessories and furniture.

Here are 10 items at widely accessible retailers that offer some fun decor goodies for under five dollars. Whether you keep them for yourself or save them up for gifts, they're a great deal!

LUMIERE WAVY CANDLEHOLDER -$3.95 at CB2

AXIS SERVERWARE- $4.95 at West Elm

BROWN BERRY NECKROLL COVER- $3.95 at Potterybarn

SALONG VASE -$4.99 at Ikea

SKOJ Clock- $4.99 at Ikea

Elsa L. Inc. Baby Decoupage Frame - Pink (4x4")- $3.98 at Target

KORT ART CARDS (5-pack) -$5.00 at Ikea

GRANUM TEA LIGHT HOLDER (5-pack) $2.99 at Ikea

MARQUIS TEALIGHT-$4.99 at ZGallerie

So, you might be wondering what I've purchased so far under five dollars. This is a gorgeous note card set I picked up in the Marshall's clearance section for just $2! They're so pretty and I can't wait to use them! I love to stock up, because I'm always writing thank you cards. To learn more about that, read my post on 'Cards are Classy'.

How about you-do you ever give yourself a specific limit like under $10 or under $5 only? Have you found any fabulous decor for under $5 or in a clearance section? Tell us about it!
